Bookclub: Citizen - Claudia Rankine
In this bookclub we'll discuss Citizen by Claudia Rankine. The session will be hosted by Megan and the discussion will be in English.
Citizen: An American Lyric (2014) is the acclaimed book by poet Claudia Rankine which pushes the boundaries of lyric poetry, interweaving various forms of text and media to create a stark portrait of Black life in 21st century America. Finalist for the National Book Award in Poetry, Citizen hit the scene in 2014 with an urgency that modern poetry often falls short of achieving. As beautiful as it is provocative, this book will bring you into spaces of questioning and social critique, as well as meditations on poetic form. If you are interested in innovative poetry and lyric essay which interrogates our present day, this book is essential reading.
“Part protest lyric, part art book, Citizen is a dazzling expression of the painful double consciousness of black life in America.” – The Washington Post
